Afternoon,

Here is a frame of points that are typical of the type you find in Louisiana. Notice the variation of type and age as well as the variety of material. Its not 100% but if I am looking at a frame of points to purchase and they all look to be made of identical material, or they are all grade 9-10 points, big red flags start going up. In general, especially from areas of the deep south if you are going to find a lot of variety in your points. Many times we get caught up on looking for perfection in points, when a little uniqueness and imperfections say "I am the real deal." Sometimes the simplest things can save you much grief.

thank you. i like the pink one that the far right bottom one is pointing at.is it real. thanks jamey

Afternoon,

Yeppers...all those are real....me finds....

That frame was done many years ago...back when I was stupid and glued my points to a hard surface. Fortunately even then I was wise enough to use water soluble glue....its a real pain to get hold of some glued on with epoxy... :'(
Now I use riker specimen boards.

I agree. When I go to shows you can always tell which guys are hunter/collectors and which guys are buyer/collectors by looking at their trays. The hunters will always have a huge variety of types, materials, and some damage on most of their finds while the buyers always have tray after tray of perfect points and blades made from similar materials. I like to buy things on occasion, especially Ft Ancient pieces, but a lot of those guys have never gotten their shoes dirty looking for artifacts. They just have more money than sense in most occasions.

There is one certain guy who comes to the Ripley show every year who has tray after tray of the most beautiful Doves, Hardins, Clovis, Blades, etc that you will ever see. When asked he tells you he hasn't found the first piece and has bought it all, most of it from the same guy. It is very obvious that the entire collection is fake. It is almost entirely made from the same type of material and they all have the same flaking patterns plus they are absolutely void of any staining or deposits at all. People have tried to tell him and set him straight, but I think he's got so much money tied up in it that he just can't make himself believe they are fake.

By the way, after that rant, great looking tray of points Atlantis.

Awsome points. The coloration of your fint is incredible. Looks like a lot of bullseyes on them. You know the Indians were living well in your neck of the woods. Great collection.
I agree with you and previous posters on condition of points. It is so rare to find something that still has a needle tip or say a lost lake with out a broken base. One of my friends has the largest collection in the south east. He buys and sells. He cant hunt anymore but he keeps the best and sells the rest.
In my collection I only have three points that I did not find. I will always know which ones they are. They were gifts. I guess that is why its my collection. I understand the value and fun people have in knapping flint but it sure has reeked havoc with many collections. You question one point and it will cloud the whole collection. A knapper sells his point as modern but the next guy may not be as honest.
I have more broken points than whole. More resharpened than untouched. If it is perfect then somebody lost a good one or cache. I have only found one true cache of knapped stuff by the same guy and it was just three pieces and it seems to have been done in a hurry,,,, But when you find that perfect point ahhhhhhhh...
Sorry for the long reply but you have some great stuff and made some good points. (LOL and I dont mean that you knapped them).
Thanks for sharing.
