Well I went out in the sun with only a T-Shirt & 45 mins into my hunt on the Dump Field the heavens opened & the thunder & lightening hit. I went for cover in the nearby wood as I had my bicycle & thought it may stop in abit. It was raining so hard there wasn't a dry place in the wood so I had to make a shelter. 1 hour later I thought it would never stop so braved the weather on my bike.

Before I got rained off the Dump Field I had 3 Roman coins, button, Lead Token & a broken Bell.

1/2 way home the rain stopped & I was cycling past the pipeline trench which I had already covered. But with the wet conditions I stuck my sensitivity to Max & went low & slow. Guess what, the rain started again & I carried on thinking I couldn't get any wetter. I had so far only picked up a few pieces of Roman Pottery & a Neolithic Flint & I wondered whether I was mad. Then suddenly a good signal & up came the hammered. NOW WHO'S MAD BABY!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I don't reconise the coin but I reckon its about 15th Century & French. Its a large coin & probably valuable now & then!!

Awesome finds, I would help but you overexposed the pictures, is that a short cross? Sorry to hear about the rain, it was 35C/95F here today with lots of sun. I went to the Trier museum to see the ConstantineI exhibition, saw enough relics, gold, silver and bronze coins to make a person a little crazy. Came home and detected for two hours between a Roman cemetery and a Celtic fortress and found a blank copper coin and a few other things not worth mentioning. HH and I hope you dried off, it is great to detect just down the road for the old and near the house, Mike

Love reading your post and seeing those relics. Keep em coming!

No, I've IDed it above.

Just for my own information, did they make any Jettons from silver? Most things I'm finding here in Holland are Jettons if they are that old. I know England is different and so is France to but I was just looking for information. If not a Jetton, is the value of the coin the weight of the silver and was it somehow denoted on the coin?

Definately not a Jetton & no they didn't make silver ones (at least not in my experience & the books I have on them).

It is as IDed above. Although some Jetton's I have seen copy the designs of the contemporary coins.

In Britain at the time we had great numbers of Foriegn coins (being a strong trader). Specially from Italy where vast loads of silver was shipped once a year to lend to businesses who had gone over to Italy to secure credit.

The weight of silver/gold was important not the coin itself.
Thats why we have so many Medieval coin weights.

Thanks for the info. I couldn't decipher the coin from the French description. Sorry.

Daryl

Woa! That is one fantastic Fench silver. I'm excited for you buddy.
Your persistence really pays off...Keep it up.

Keep safe...

It's in great shape!

Congratulations on your first French Hammered coin!
