I found this iron piece measuring .40 inches diameter and approx. 2x2 inches yesterday. It was located near a spring at the CSA cav. camp where I dug the A.V.C. button this year. Dman, Josh, and I dug many CS relics there and the site was full of horseshoes and pieces of horseshoes. It looks like a there was another blacksmith made part that broke off the bottom of the "V". All guess welcomed and Merry Christmas, Quindy.

I think you are on the right track Quindy. Too heavy for a saddle piece. Being that thick will be for something heavy. My guess would be it was used on a wagon, cannon or carriage.

Quindy .. I am pretty sure that is a drop link off of a main side support from a wagon.

Merry Christmas, sir!

.. also, although it seems a bit small for this application, I suppose it could be a front chain link from a cannon.

Rob, you may have it as Gen. John Hunt Morgan's 3 inch rifled guns and old 12 pounder cannons were present at that camp. I found this piece near the old road that crossed the little stream immediately below the spring. Merry christmas Rob. Go out and dig another leather coin purse with a gold piece and CW period silver coins & LC as you did when we hunted Virginia. That relic ranks in the TOP 5 that I have ever seen recovered.
Go my 2010 goal TODAY of 200 relics. Will post later, your friend Quindy.
