The Rise and Fall of the Second Empire, 1852-1871 - Alain Plessis - Google Books

According to the article above, the "RUOLZ" is referring to the item being electro-plated. "The emperor gave the example by ordering 3,000 pieces of ruolz-ware"

So, I am thinking that the "RUOLZ" part isn't so much the makers mark, but referring to the item being electro-plated.

It was an interesting journey for me, might have revived a couple more brain cells in the old memory lanes! Thanks for sharing.

Oh My! lots of reading. That was an interesting turn of research. You people that respond here are amazing! Of coarse it generates more questions. Is this spoon from the time period between 1852 - 1871? I so it would help confirm a piece of a very large puzzle of artifacts that will be uncovered, hopefully we're in the right area. Thank you gazmuth for responding.

i think there was a berry spoon, here someplace, that was marked with "RUOLZ"
this is the name of the guy that did the silverplate method "
comte henri de ruolz "

Henri de Ruolz invented a method of gilding without the use of mercury , a method used in jewelery and for tableware. The " Ruolz "is used in the manufacture of cutlery.

I've attached this photo to show a size reference. This is a very large spoon note the modern quarter next to it.

The first letter is definitely a P not sure whats next but RUOLZ after is correct. So that's the elctro-plate maker?

Does the number 75 on the spoon have any meaning?

Is there anyway to tell the age?

Silver plating was invented in 1840, Napoléon III ordered a set for the Tuleries, and Christoffe bought the Marquis de Ruolz' patents for the process. With plate, the bourgeoisie could have fancy tables too. The last great change was the introduction of stainless steel and its industrial production; with the best of it being carefully designed.

CHINON
Launched in 1862, this model was known for many years as “Filet” or “Vieux Paris.” The stately form & sober ridges suggest the shape of a violin.

cw0909 Can't thank you enough for that wealth of information! This will also help me search the internet in a more efficient manor. I am marking this as solved. P DR RUOLTZ (spoon) 1875 looks like the other number is a 5 for 5grams of silver content. THANK YOU !!
