I am currently hunting the site of a circa1800- 1820 cabin site. I was able to salvage two more flat buttons! One is TINY. It is small enough to just cover my index fingernail, and I pictured it on a dime. The other button is neat. It has a cool pattern on the front. I also dug a 45 or so caliber hand molded musket ball! You can see the sprew, and where it was cut off!
The highlight of the trip was seeing the mystery item come out of deep red clay. Initially, we thought it was a large cent, but it was brass. Then we thought big flat button, but there was no shank or solder. Upon cleaning it up, I can see the top of some letters on the back. I think it is "ISK." I am looking for help on this one from you colonial experts! Notice the arrow on the "front" side. It is cast, not bent over.
