Garrett 7 ADS for Gold Prospecting in NC

My friend has an working Garrett 7ADS. He lives in NC and I live in CT. I can't drive to help him out hands-on. He is experienced with coin shooting with this machine. He would like to try nugget shooting and gold prospecting in NC. He has large and small(4"sniper) coils. I have no experience with this type of machine. I sent him some small tuning pieces(lead in various nugget sizes) to test for sensitivity. Will the meter on the ADS be helpful for him? Will it find small(how small) gold nuggets?

He needs to look for some of the OLD garrett books. Garrett and Lagal talk about using the ADS for prospecting. I know they aren't the hottest on tiny nugs and pickers, but often they used them to find black-sand pay streaks for old fashioned panning or sluicing.
