18K gold plated brass. The story goes, the wedding ring might be a months paid (or pretty valuable), so at times of War they would be left with the wife (and/or kids), incase of death, giving a short term income. A 'fake' would be put in its place.
However, there are other explanations & these rings were still about post-CW.

We (hunting partners and me) have found a number of them in sawmill ghost town's from the late 1800's and early 1900's. Sold as real by scammers and peddlers

I think I have it’s twin, most of the gold plate is worn off and it has 18k on the inside. Found it while beach hunting in an area where I have found several late 1800’s to early 1900’s shotgun shell headstamps.

This was found next to numerous CW eagle buttons and some gun parts from the CW. Found on a battlefield and no post CW items are found in the area, just modern aluminum cans. Not even shotgun bases which is great.

Thats another reason.

Yea Smokey nice find but you wonder if the guy was killed? Really hits home when you recover personal items. Let's tear it up again this Saturday!

Probably killed. I used a ring mandrel to make it totally round again. It took an hour to find the new mandrel.

Such personal relics are even better than coins...

The personal items are right up there with cut Spanish reales!
