I went back to the old log house today. Every time I go there I seem to find something good! Seems like I have been hunting the same old spots....but things just keep coming up....so I keep looking!? I hate that the finds are all in such bad shape but I guess with all the cows and fertilizer they don't stand much of a chance of coming out of the ground in very good condition.

Does anybody have a clue on the medal? It has an eagle on the top...then a crown...says Deutschekrieder Fechtanstalt around the outside and then the initials of F.W.? ?V. St. .........When I found it I thought it was from some sort of a toy...then I got home and washed it off a bit and found a medal!

The 1 Mark made the oldest coin I have found to date! 1875!
I can't read the date on the mercury....? :-\
And the wheat is from 1950.

Oh yeah....Monty...I found bullets too!? ;D?

Great finds!!! Is this where you found the Indian Head? Anxious to see what you pull from there next. Keep it up. HH

Re: German Medal? 1875 1 Mark....mercury and a wheat!

Hi Nana40 , the medal you found is indeed German (either from Prussia or Saxony). I'll do some researches and will let you know then. Very nice find!!!

Re: German Medal? 1875 1 Mark....mercury and a wheat!

Great finds Nana! The 1875 German 1 Mark coin is silver. I can't see the badge details, what does the legend read in the middle? HH, Mike

great finds nana! that must be some evil soil to turn that merc black like that!! the medal is very cool. if i had to guess i would say world war 1? ???

Re: German Medal? 1875 1 Mark....mercury and a wheat!

I believe it reads DEUTSCHE KRIEGER FECHTANSTALT, which would mean something like, "German Institute for War, Fencing." The following page shows other Deutsche Krieger Fechtanstalt medals or badges:

http://www.smvb.de/auszeichnungen/kriegerbund_3.html

Someone fluent in German will have to take it from here. However, the text seems to indicate that students in the institute's fencing school received a different medal or badge as they advanced to the next highest rank. So, I'm guessing yours is one of those. BTW, most of the listings that I found seemed to be for badges or stickpins dating shortly after WWI.

Re: German Medal? 1875 1 Mark....mercury and a wheat!

Fechtanstalt translates to "fight institute".

Congratulations, Nanners. Your persistance is paying off big time. Clean those puppies off and post what they look like. I'm excited for you.

Re: German Medal? 1875 1 Mark....mercury and a wheat!

Hey Haupin......THAT IS CLEANED! :D I'm tellin ya.....even the silver comes out of the ground REALLY BAD there! I thought I'd be SOOOO excited about finding my first Merc.....but that one ain't much to look at.... :-\

Thanks for helping me figure out the medal. I looked for it before I posted last night and couldn't find ANYTHING! The link PBK posted has some that are close.... It just puzzles me as to why these things are outside...in the dirt..... And how? How would you obtain a German Medal back then? Here's the pic again (maybe better)...and the back.... I am going to try and get a picture of the old house. I don't take the camera with me when I go there because I have to park the car sooo far away from the house.

Thanks ya'll! You're the best!

;)

Nana,

nice artifacts. Looks like that site of yours is a good one.

And you were complaing a few months ago of only pulling up bullets and shoutgun shells.

Now all your finding are historical items requiring look-ups on the web. Way to go.

Your moving up in class gal, keep it up.

have a good un................

? ? ? ? ? ?

i was wondering the same thing. the only thing that came to my mind , due to the number of german artifacts was maybe a german immigrant lived or worked there? brought the stuff with them from the old country?
