Giant Brass Safety Pin

Hello All. I found this item on two hunts at the same site about 6-months apart. Dug the pointy end piece in March, it looked interesting so I kept it. I did not visit the site again till yesterday when I found the rest of it.

It is all brass with no markings and 5-1/2 inches long.

The site is an old house/orange grove (both long gone) near a 1920's store, still in use.

Yup, looks like a big diaper pin, but, strange it would be made of brass, since brass isn't usually used as spring material. Maybe it was part of a decoration of some sort. Someone probably tried to use it as a pin and broke it.

They were also used in our college pool to attach to your trunks. They were chrome plated & stamped with a number corresponding to your locker. You handed it to the person and they'd open the locker for you. I life guarded so had my own padlocked locker. Must've carried my car keys around on one for at least 20 years.

When I was in the Navy in the late '50's, on board the ship we used a net bag to put our dirty socks in, and one of those brass safety pins was used to close the net sack, and then that was placed in the
dirty laundry bag in our berthing compartment. So yes, it's a laundry pin, probably used in other places besides aboard U S Navy ships.

My take on your pin is that it isn't giant, I've seen novelty pins 12 inches long, some are used for keychain fobs. The numbered pins are check pins like used at public swimming pools and gyms, etc. I've seen blank pins used on laundry bags (the laundry bag is marked so the pin doesn't need to be) and horse blankets.
