Hi, looks like you're near Naples? Not much differant further North East, I'm near Sodus Point on Lake Ontario, Wayne County. Been trying to get out every chance of warm weather we've had and very slowly the ground is thawing. We're still having a lot of cold freezing night temps. Last week I could only dig the surface of about 2 inches in mild weather, yesterday I was getting about 4 inches in some areas (with shovel).
There's a big differance between grassy yards and simular areas, must be holding a lot of moisture and I can barely break ground even with a shovel. I wasn't expecting that with the mild temps we've been seeing but then again a lot of snow melted quickly and everything is saturated and the sun jsut isn't warm enough to thaw the surface for us. So I've been walking corn and bean fields that have more exposed dirt, they also have been plowed at one point in time so finds can be closer to the surface. Even in the open fields like these with a shovel I am only breaking around 4 inches of ground then it's rock hard dirt.
Friday was near 60 degrees and today will be 50, Sunday around 47 degrees but it got cold last night (quite frosty this morning) and will take this morning's sun to help thaw the surface again. I think the afternoons for this weekend will be best but stay ahead of the rain that's due for later Saturday.
Chris
