Found an object yesterday that has stumped me. This iron object has around the rim small flakes of gold on it. How they got there I do not know. The only thing I can think of it was used to melt fine gold dust on it but than it would have gold on the surface. Other than that maybe it crushed ore. Your gues is as good as mine. ??? ??? Ohh it was found in the Sierra foothills along with 1850's era fork and spoon and square nails.

I am thinking maybe something out of a stamp mill or crusher. Jimbob

It seems to have everything everyone has said. Maybe it was used by merchant that purchased gold ore or a miner. In the center an area for crushing ore with a hammer, a bowl for panning out the junk and to put the gold bearing rocks in the furnace. Nice find.

Jim :hello:

It would have to be melted on there. As you have R.H.,I have crushed a lot of AU and it doesnt "stick",to iron like that. Also if you put a rock on that and hit it with a hammer, you would have fragments all over the place
