Does any one know if there is any gold in Mississippi or Louisiana ? I had heard there was some small flakes found near Jena, LA and Vicksburb, MS

If there were a few flakes, they were probably deposited from eswhere as due to the sedimentary rocks n both states, naturally occuring gold would not be expected. There is some in Alabama and Georgia, however.

DrKennedy,
- There is certainly gold in LA and Miss. I've taken it out of a number of spots. Now- don't go thinking along the lines of California or Alaska gold cuz it ain't! It is at best "flour" gold. TINY. Small enough that normal methods will cause the water to get turbid enough to float the gold right out of the box and pan. (hint- little soap is an absolute must.)

Draw a line from Livingston or Woodville Texas all the way across to Jackson MS. There is likely some on any creek between the two if you apply some thought to concentrating. And- if you are from Zachary LA- you got some even closer. There is some to be found in both Sara Bayou and Thompson Creek if you'll- again- look where it might concentrate then work A LOT of sand. Some is there- but you won't get rich. Look for it to be in the 50-300 mesh size.

My last outing- I did the math on what it would take to get an ounce- I have to work 40 hour work weeks for 2 years, 2 months and two more days to get a full ounce.
Have Fun.

Gold prices would have to be pretty high to make that work! Which is probably just what the early miners thought about areas we seek/prospect/slobber over now...
