I use a Mizar Electronic gold test kit. Battery operated, with a light to tell you what karat gold. You don't need to,scratch the item, you just clip it and dip it in the provided solution.

Can you tell me which Mizar you have? I saw a few different models online and want to pick one up for panning. Problem is I find mostlu flower gold so I'm not to sure how effective such a device would be.
