After all the rain recently I figured doing some creek hunting might pay off. The first two hours were slow with nothing to show but a couple worked flake tools. Then I noticed a heavily eroded bank some 20 - 30 feet from the creek and found two lying close together at the bottom of the bank.

I also found both of these barely sticking out of the bank, the second point is the best point I've found this year but the type I'm unfamiliar with. Any ideas on this type? it has a delicately flaked concave base, fairly thick, and larger paleo flaking? I'm thinking it may be a dalton varient, but not really sure.

I'll let the experts tell you what they are, just thought I'd say nice finds & thanks for posting!

thanks for looking and the comments Chris and Molly , i think you could be right about the drybrook type, sure looks similar.

Thirty7, do you know what the fishtail point is made of? Looks like a un-heat treated Jasper. Very dark chocolate color in the photo. Very nice.

The lecroy point is mid archaic, way before the bow and arrow.

I believe that lecroy points are actually small knifes, used primarily for stripping bark from trees. Just my theory though.

Good job hunting in cold conditions !!

the fishtail? (i'm still not absolutely sure) is actually made of high quality black flint. That's an interesting theory on the lecroy, they look like they'd be a perfect true arrowhead, especially the serrated ones. You're right though, way before the bow and arrow, early archaic, i guess we can only speculate. I've got cabin fever, any day above 35, i try and salvage something. lol, thanks unitas

37,

Great finds. Are you in the N, S, E, or W part of Virginia? Makes me want to start creek hunting. Thanks for showing...Mud

mud, I'm in sw va. in the foothills, these were found near the wv / va border.

Nice finds. Congrats.

Thirty7,
Incredible. I'm especially impressed with the first item/photo. Is that a raised area in the center of the point that mirrors the larger? I've not seen such a point. Impressive flint.
docmann

hey docmann, yes it's a raised area or stacked section that the knapper couldn't thin down, thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't really noticed, but it does mirror the blade outline of the point. thanks, Ryan
