Have always wondered how to tell what grading condition a coin is in. For instance take a look at my 1842 large cent. The lowest value I have found is in the books from $18 to $20 but I don;t know what that grade means. Is my coin even lower than that or higher? What do they look for when grading?

Thanks for looking and attempting to grade my coin.

Gradeing coins is a touchy thing, no two people grade them alike, and pictures hurt grading even more.

That being said I'd give your coins a VG-8 for details on the head etc but drop it a few points for enviromental damage so it's probably a net G-4 (or right about $18-$20) if you want to sell it on ebay, if you want to sell it to a dealer knock another 40% off the price

Good thread still working hard here to get a grasp on grading. A while back I ran across some great sites while googling that had some pretty good examples. I put on favorites then someone nuked out favorites a bit to clear up space. LoL probably me while saving job listings.

If I run across it again I will link it to here.

Or perhaps someone has some great links out there.
