ground mineralization

Hi, I've just started to try some gold prospecting with a metal detector. My instruction manual talks about ground mineralization and I've learned that gold often follows black sand, which would be showing high numbers in my metal detector's display. What I need to know is if it's only in the negative ground balance areas where you find gold or can it also be found in more positive grounds. We have a property in fairly close distance from old gold mining areas, but my detector's ground balance reference value show only between 40-77! In other words - am I wasting my time?
