Found in Lee County Virginia a couple of years ago.

Dosn't look like any gun part I've ever seen. It's obviously heavily rusted but the first thought that came to mind was a latch for a window.

I believe it to be part of a sideplate for black powder gun with set trigger.
The protruding piece on side would be struck by the trigger spur.
the trigger would be pulled once to "arm" the trigger than a very light pull would release the trigger spur striking the lock discharging the weapon.

No, never seen anything like that in a firearm of any kind. The set trigger mechanism in a muzzleloader is all in the trigger not in the lock, except a small fly to keep the lock from catching the halfcock notch.
