My sister, who just started detecting, was going for a walk in Greenwood Cemetery, a magnificent place if you ever get a chance to see it. She walked past a distraught man, who was looking all around for his wedding ring. He had been throwing snowballs with his kids and the ring slipped off his finger into the snow. They spent sometime looking for the ring, but to no avail. He left very upset. The next day was warm and my sister decided to go back to see if the snow melted and could find the ring. Within ten minutes, without a detector, she spotted the ring, as all the snow had melted.
Now the difficulty began, she had no information about the man. The only thing she new was the name on the grave that he had been visiting. She went to the cemetery office, but they had no information about any family members related to that particular grave. Not to be defeated, my sister and her daughter took to the internet and researched the name and dates on the grave. After some dead ends, she eventually located the a nephew of the man who was buried. She explained the whole story, but the man stated that he did not know who that could be, but said he would call his cousin to see if she knew anything. Well, as it turned out, the man called his cousin and she was shocked because it was her husband that had lost his ring!! The woman called my sister and was so grateful. They had been married for 30 years and her husband was beside himself.
Well needless to say, the man and his ring were reunited on New Year’s Day. He and his wife drove to my sister’s house in Brooklyn. He and his wife gave my sister a beautiful card with $100 in it! A happy ending to the beginning of a new year!
