Harrassing General Sherman's Flank
I forgot to post this when I returned home a Thanksgiving trip to Georgia.
I have been chasing leads on some locations through Georgia where Sherman's March to the Sea took place. I have been harrassing his leftt flank for years looking for goodies and have done well.
The day before Thanksgiving, I was working an area near a roadway used by Sherman's forces when I came upon what I believe to have been a Picket Post guarding the old roadway which is still in use today.
I had hunted this area before but today was different. A small area had been cleared for some minor construction. The topsoil had been removed and a spot about 40 yards wide was laid bare. I stepped out of my truck walked about 5 feet and when I put my detector in action, boom, I dug the first of 4 Williams Cleanouts. During a really quick flurry, I dug two three ringers, what I believe to be a Sharpe's Carbine Projectile, (I also found the base of the cartridge), a pistol bullet, three melted or flattened projectiles and one carved bullet along with a small piece of brass. All these came from an area about 12 feet in circumference, thus my surmise that this was a picket post probably occupied over a short period of time by more than one Union Soldier. I hunted the remainder of the clearing for a good long while and found nothing else. In this general area, is a large encampment that I am still looking for. I believe I now know where it is but I have to wait till Deer Season is over to go into the woods looking. Gun shots were ringing out all over the woods the day I was there and even though I had an orange vest and hat, I didn't feel that getting into thick woods with all that going on was a good idea. I do have permission to hunt the area.
The day before, I found a S.C. State Seal Button in another location not associated to this one but I left it at my Mother In Law's Home so no pic here for that. I won't return there till after the holiday season. The button was heavily damaged with the rear piece missing.
The Union Troops in this Picket Post area were from Michigan and were assigned to protect Kilpatrick's rear, litterally.
Thanks For Looking!
