Has any one tried using a post hole auger???

I had an idea and was wondering if anyone had tried using a gas powered post hole auger to dig down to bedrock so they can do some test panning?? They cost about $350.00 and can be found at any farm supply store. It would dig an eight inch round hole up to four feet deep.

Many hundreds a times and with righteous success too. Go down 1' and hold for 10 seconds to bring up a sample.Shovel it aside north,go down another 1' and put it, south,1' more and east,1' more and west.You now have the knowledge of all paylayers,false bedrock,and concentrations of flood gold. I just modified my Ice fishing auger and put some small spikes on the end and it will now dig a hole in very hard gravel. I am going out next weekend and I will let you know how it worked.
