I’m home visiting for the holidays and went out to the thrift store that is run by the local animal shelter. I bought this sterling rope necklace which is one of the heavier ones I’ve found and it cost $2. I don’t have my scale with me but it’s got to weigh at least two ounces and a quick search of the hallmark which is “ STERLING M.S. CO” had two listed on eBay. One listing said the small gold chain wrapped around the silver rope was 18k and the other said 14k.

I had a similar bracelet I dug out of my bag of goodies that also had a small gold chain I remembered. (Thought it was plated gold till today)

Now, I’ve always assumed that it was just a smaller gold plated silver chain wrapped around the middle because the only metal stamps present are 925. I have found two other pieces that contain silver and gold and the silver and gold stamps were present.

So, here’s my question - has anyone found anything similar that actually had a gold chain wrapped around?

I do not have my testing kit with me either...but I did scratch it with a razor to try and expose any other colors underneath and it seems to be gold. Maybe it’s gold maybe it’s silver...I don’t know.

Well thanks for any responses in advance. Merry Christmas and happy hunting!

Very nice piece! I hope the small gold chain works out to be real. :occasion14:

Update:

Gold turned out to be real, 2 grams 14k
Silver weighed 44 grams

Congrats that's a good score keep it up

Not sure i would have scrapped it. You probably could have sold it for more than melt, then again maybe not. Great find and a greater price

Nice. I have been detecting since 1981 and have made/seen a lot of finds in that time. Yet, the finds keep coming with no end in sight...isn't it great?
