Doesn't look heavy duty enough to be a train coupling.Still thinking some kind of cable splicing type of thing or part to a metal brake shearing machine or something along those lines.

My first thought was an old knuckle (railcar coupler) but I'm sure it's not that. Could be a part off a steam locomotive.
