I am still a NEWBIE even though i have had a detector for many years. I have just never had any luck and i dont think i really know how to use my detector properly, i bought it used in FL back in 2004 hoping to find good stuff on the beach after the hurricanes, but no luck. I found maybe $.75 in change and it cost me lots more in gas.. I have been out several more times since then, but not in the last 2 years. I enjoy it, but have only found 1 silver coin EVER. I now live in GA though. I thought i'd take it out and see if it still works with it does. The stock nimh pack is shot, but the pack that i put my own batteries in still works. I went up to the neighborhood school which was built in the 1960's but still have no luck finding anything old. Here's what I got: 8 pennies, 3 dimes, and other junk. I threw some of the pull tabs in the trash too along with some pencil tops. Oldest coin is 1970 something. I was out for abut an hour. i really need to work on pinpointing both with the detector and with my actual pinpointer. I have a Gator shovel too but maybe i need to get something more user friendly. Let me reiterate, I never find anything but i still enjoy this. : )

welcome to the forum.... keep at it you will hit some goodies before you know it.

welcome to the forum.... keep on digging! :headbang:

Good hunt. Nothing to complain about. Almost all of us started out finding just what you are finding.
Then, we began learning the machine that we had, reading all the info we could on our detector, and other detectors, and
proper ways to hunt. Then, we began doing the research concerning the area in which we lived. Then, the good stuff
begins to be uncovered.
You are in a great area, with great folks. Look for a good THing Club, and go to the meetings, see what others are finding
and where they are looking. Meet some THers, and make friends.
If you are finding that many coins, then you are doing things right.....just not at the right spot. You'll get there.

good start mike. Don't get disscourged its out there. i been doing it for about ten years.....and feel that im still a newbi i learn something new er'day. btw im in nw georgia around dalton,if your close give a shout well hook up and look togather hh greg

I got a book written about my detector that i am finally reading. hopefully it can give me some pointers to learn my detector, its an older one but should be ok still. The ground is still the same. From most of what i have been reading, Atlanta city parks are OFF LIMITS!. That really sucks. I am hoping to find somewhere to go tomorrow before i go visit family in Chattanooga. Thanks for the welcome everyone

I grew up in South Georgia, the state is FULL of history. You just have to find places to go. Parks around Atlanta are pretty much off limits because of the Civil War sites. BUT....old farms....churches, etc. You gotta research and shake hands. Get to know the people and doors will open. BTW, family in Chattanooga...another OLD place. Take your detector along, get permission to detect their yards and the grass strip along the sidewalks if they live in the city, you might be surprised. if they own a farm, ask how old the land is. In the old days, just like in England, people worked the fields by hand. Things got dropped.

I'm still amazed every time I dig something up that I don't expect to find. GL & HH!!

Unfortunately for me my family lives in newer housing communities. From what I understand the TVA controls lots of land in Chattanooga and the city and county parks are off limits too!

Times have changed....Sorry man. :dontknow:

I am finally reading the book "Mastering the Minelab Explorer XS & S". I have had this book forever, but never looked into it. I am really learning some things. I have the XS. I can wait to go out in the morning. I guess i will go back to the school to try out some things. Probably no 64 and earlier their though. The place was built in the 60's but i just got newer things today. Maybe my new settings will help me out some

I see from this book i was doing several things wrong with my sensitivity settings and my discrimination
