hello all---

I live near the finger lakes in upstate new York,...I have an old steam runs thru my front yard....while excavating the stream for different reasons, I found rocks with heavy quartz deposits, I believe they are quartz and the rocks had gold coloring in them.....my metal detector showed nothing, however, I have never seen rocks like these and these deposits almost look like diamonds, so I am wondering if they are quartz at all. However, I can tell you these rocks do hold color, quartz apparently and are very different looking....anybody know what I should or could do to verify what these deposits are or have any ideas<

How about posting a picture of them!

Most likely it's just iron pyrite....."Fools Gold". Iron pyrite is very commonly found in quartz veins...........sorry.

Gold is soft, chip a piece off and see if you can flatten it with a hammer, if it breaks it's not gold, so they tell me.

Post a pic if you want the people here to help, they are good but not telepathic yet....except maybe Jeff of pa!
