Good day all. I was recently detecting in my hometown, Al Sweida Syria (will post precise image of the location) and found a mysterious coin that I need help identifying. Any help would be greatly appreciated 😊
The "M" coin first appeared after the reform in ~498 when Anastasius introduced a design change for copper coins; Greek letters indicating the value in 'nummi'; 'M' for 40 'nummi equates to a coin called a 'follis'; as in your coin. It's Byzantine. These 'M' coins were minted through at least the reign of Michael III ('the Drunkard') 842 to 867AD.
