This is likely an inside pants or underwear buckle, late-19thc as suggested by nkellam. :thumbsup:
The examples I've found will often have the date 1871 stamped into the frame here.

I have found identical buckles with dates as early as the 1830s.

Were you able to ID the item laying next to the buckle? I found same exact “cap” with a thread below as if it screws into or over something.

I knew there was at least ONE reason to stay in MA.
Left there a LONG time ago.
Nice find!
I would love to be able t detect around Quabbin with all those cellar holes.
Western MA along the trail also. Cummington area.. the list is endless!

I'm thinking the "cap" next to the pants buckle is either an overalls button/rivet or if it's threaded, then it may be the filler-cap to an oil lantern. :icon_scratch:
