Help identify!

Can anyone help me identify this item. Found in the middle of a farm field. It’s about 2inches tall and has a hole in it that runs to the bottom. It’s made of brass. I think it looks like a candle stick holder, but seems small for that.

I was going to say base for a carriage/wagon lamp. The hole the bottom is for overflow from the small reservoir that fits inside.

I was thinking a lamp part at first glance but the small hole defeats that thought...

If it is a brake part, it's one of the early hydraulic pistons?
