Help Identifying A Buckle

I found this iron frame buckle in a Civil War union cavalry camp yesterday. It’s unusual in that instead of using a tongue, it has small projections on its front and back. Has anyone seen a buckle like this before, and what was it used for. Thanks!

It would have been used on a web type belt, but not sure of what you would call it other than an adjuster.
