It looks old

Well it is an effigy of maybe a turtle or lizard. Not uncommon to be on pots or handles in mayan and aztec. The hole may have been for suspension. Many effigies were made of clay in the americas north and south. With out the rest of the item be hard to say with out pottery analysis.

the hole was for gasses to escape, while the piece was in the kiln...

I agree with TN...difficult to date or identify outside of a specialized lab.

It is one of three feet on a bowl. The hole is for a rattle ball. The animal is a dog.

Looks Toltec to me,
Turtle definately,
Most likely a pots handle
