Re: Help ID'ing Buckle

There is a very similar buckle listed in PLATES AND BUCKLES OF THE AMERICAN MILITARY 1795-1874 by Sydney C. Kerksis. It is listed as a U.S. Militia sword belt plate, circa 1850. It has a rarity of 7 on a scale of 1-10.

Re: Help ID'ing Buckle

Nice piece, but I think you only have 1/2 of it. You better go back and find the other half.

Wow, nice find Jeff...I'm surprised that it hasn't received more comments,

Re: Help ID'ing Buckle

Pre Civil War Militia Two Piece Buckle tongue. Nice piece. The other piece could be there but it is not probable. The other end was often better attached to the leather belt. Your piece is nice as it is though. Don't worry about the other side. You could probably find something close to matching it if you carry it to Civil War shows, etc. but to find the matching piece with exactly the same patina would be next to impossible. I have been that route before. Whatever you do, don't clean it!!!!!!

Great find and one you will always remember.

DaChief!
