Detector(s) used
MXT,Excellerator 4.5x7,Ace 250, Bounty Hunter 202
I've been MD'ing for about two years and have used a Bounty Hunter the entire time. I recently got an Ace 250 and have not had much luck with it. I feel like I know what I'm doing but I don't think I have a good idea yet about how this machine operates. The BH gives different tones for different coinage, but the Ace gives a single tone for coins. I've been hunting in coin mode and have so far found only pennies, I swear this thing acts like it won't detect a coin besides a penny. I know this sounds cheesy, but I really feel I'm not setting it up right. I know there are coins where I'm hunting but I'm getting signals that don't repeat and sometimes false signals. I've read too much good about these detectors, so I really feel like I don't know the machine yet. Any words of wisdom would be greatly welcomed at this point. Should I hunt in custom mode and use discrimination or just use the coin program and go with it? Also, how high are you guys setting the sesitivity? I'm hunting about two notches from full bar as any higher and it goes nuts. What am I doing wrong? My sons are kicking my rear with the BH daily and I need to redeem myself.

hi run 4 bars of power -- the custom mode will be your best freind soon -- ok if "clad" & silver coin and jewelry hunting try this -- leave from dime up "blocks" turned on (the 4 right hand side blocks)--- (note old pre 1882 cents and wheaties will ring up as dimes (try it and you'll see) --- turn off all blocks to the left ---which * ditches the zinc cent and alot of trash this way --- then use a gold ring and a nickle leave whatever spaces it rings up under on your machine "turned on" --- this will give you older wheat pennies and pre 1982 cents , niclkles , all modern clad dimes , quarters and halves plus all silver coins and silver jewelry and gold items --- while you will still get some trash it will not be as much as running in all metal mode (or the coin mode which has the zinc cents in it -- those zinc cents cause a lot of junk to be picked up --- cutting out the zinc cents -- dumps a lot of junk "out" while not losing much )--- it will still show up as found when you find a non selected target but it will not make steady sound (it might beep once) maybe --- but it will not "steadily" ring up --- this set up is for non relic hunting --coinshooting / jewelry --- relic hunting is a totally differant "set up" of course --- I used a bounty hunter quick draw II for years and yes , I like the bounty hunters "sounds" the iron & foil (farting noise) vs the coin "ping" --- these types of sounds in a Ace 250 would have been nice but the 250 is set up to be more "visual" ----because this machine can sort stuff by type more exactly than the bounty hunters and displays it "visually" for you and is thus more "visual" first with sound "second" machine --- where most bounty hunters are "sound" first with visuals second type machines --- once you take the time to learn how to tell it exactly just what you want it to find for you , I think you'll learn like it --- I hope this helps --- use some coins and jewelry and do some air test using the settings --tinker with them --its not hard -- BTW unlike the other 5 "factory" preset modes---the custom setting "remembers) and will stay "fixed" till yu change it or the machine runs out of juice for awhile ( I use the custom mode mainly)---by the way 4 bar is plenty of power --- trying to "push" too muchpower hurts rather than helps --- think of it like listening to a stero -- do you get the sweetest sound at full blast? no of course not --- at about 3/4 volume (power) is where the most power output while still getting a sweet sound "sweet spot" is ---past that you are "pushing" too much power and it "overpowers" and you get noise rather than lovely "music"---Ivan

I really think you not getting you coil over the goodies. When you Son gets a hit have him call you over to see if you can get the beep? Maybe your coil technique need some work? I don't know but if you Son gets a good hit and you can't beep over his target then we'll have to revisit the potential problem.

Hi:
There's not much to figure out ;D
I had a problem getting used to the pinpointing when
I first got the machine but now I have it down pat.
I run mine on four to five bars or higher sometimes
if ground conditions permit.
Experiment with the Custom Mode.
If your not finding "stuff" it may be that your in a area thats
already been hit hard.
As far as depth is concerned, air testing doesn't mean much.
You'll get 6 to 7 inches (some times more) with the standard coil depending
on the ground and the size of the target. I just bought the
9x12 coil for greater depth and thats made a world of
difference.
Just give it a chance like I did. I had thought about selling it
for another machine but have since changed my mind. Yu'll
get used to the sounds of the machine. It always takes time
to adjust when your used to another machine. I have an MXT
and it sounds very different from the Ace.

Good luck.

Just got back today from a few hours of hunting. I tried to only dig the repeatable signals and came up with three pennies and an axe head. One thing that may be throwing me is the location of the last few hunts. It's an old early 1800's house that has been neglected for years. To say there's a lot of trash would be an understatment. I think I need to head to a park or ball field and just try to pop clad out for a few hunts to get a better feel for this machine, I'm thinking it would shorten the learning curve than trying to fight so much other "clutter" in the ground where I've been hunting.

you can cut out a lot of the trash --- thus ditching most the "bad" signals while losing very little to any good stuff --- by using the ace 250's discrimanation abilities correctly --- then it simply a matter of getting the coil over the good stuff (ie location)--- Ivan

Thanks for the reply Ivan. I'm going to set up my custom mode tonight like you suggested. Tommorrow, weather permitting, I'll give it a try and see how things go.

I think Robert Roy has some good things to say. I usually hunt in 'coin' mode, with sensitivity set around 4, but I do go as high as 6 or 7 if there is not a lot of junk in the ground. That said, other times, I have turned my sensitivity as low as 2 in really trashy areas. I usually look for repeatable readings in at least two directions before I dig. The Ace is pretty good at ID'ing targets. The best advice is to just go out and experiment, see what works for you, and learn what the detector is telling you. It will take hours to get to know it, but the machine is talking to you with each target. Be patient and you will be surprised at how your coin count increases in a short amount of time.
