Help needed - Surfmaster P.I. Plus

The wire inside has come off of the Pulse Delay knob. This goes to my headphones. Is there a way to reattach it? I have tried solder but it will not stick to the round cylinder inside. Please tell me what is needed to attach this wire so I can hit the beach.
