I was on the beach at Silloth with grandchildren, and my grandson (9)
found a long heavy metal object.

He thinks it might be a very old nail off a sunken ship, and I agree.
(if so, it would be more precious to him than a hoard of coins!)

It's about 12 inches long, and very rusty.

We'd be very grateful for anyone's help.

That's very reasonable. To keep it from literally disintegrating, you need to submerge it in water for about a week, change out the water every week for at least 6 weeks. You can use an aquarium hydrometer to test the old water for salt content. Keep soaking it until the hydrometer reads zero salt content. Then you can preserve it.

Thanks so much for that information.
When it reads zero salt, will the rust have disappeared or will it look the same?
Also, how should we then preserve it?
Carol.

1st - Welcome Aboard! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).

2nd - I moved this request from Today's Finds! over to Our Discoveries > What Is It? for more exposure.
