Help on some pewter please

Dug this today in the ocean it's pewter possibly a cover to a creamer its 2 3/4 Inches long by 2 inches wide and I think I see a patent date of Sept 24 186? Maybe someone can find a picture of it. Thanks

Maybe the lid off a pewter measuring cup? Those came in a series of sizes. Most sets I've looked at didn't have lids, but some did.

For info, because US patents take their date from publication in the Patents Bulletin and this has been traditionally published on Tuesdays, only certain dates are possible. The only years in the 1860s when 24th September fell on a Tuesday were 1861 and 1867. Your find relates to Homer Wright’s 1867 design patent for a “pitcher top” that would have been affixed to a piece of glass tableware.



Wright was born in Wellsville, Ohio on 8th April 1833, the son of an eminent Irish physician. The family moved to Pittsburgh PA when he was a youngster and, although he studied medicine under his father, he abandoned a career as a doctor and went into manufacturing. He sold “Dr. Wright’s Tonic Bitters” and “Dr. Wright’s Invigorating Cordial Bitters” between around 1855-1858 and other ‘medicinal’ products. Then, in the early 1860s, he went into partnership with Henry and Benjamin Collins to purchase the “Pittsburgh Britannia Manufacturing Company”, which they renamed “Collins & Wright”. The company produced pewter buttons, Britannia-ware utensils and metal trimmings for glass tableware such as jugs, salt & pepper shakers and other items. Wright filed a number of design patents for such items

PS: "Britannia Metal" is a proprietary type of pewter with a typical composition in the region of 92% tin, 6% antimony, and 2% copper.
