Help!! What is the date!!

I came across this V nickel in some change I got from a small convenience store. I noticed how different it looked from other coins and immediately became interested in it's history. I went online and saw that the Liberty V nickels from the late 1800's are very collectible-and some valuable too-like the ones made in 1885 and 1886. This is where I need help.the last digit in the year is not clearly visible so I'm hoping for somebody to help me identify the year from the following picture of the coin

Those are better. I think I see an 8 on the end there. But its pretty hard to tell. Thats a great find in change!!

Kind of looks like 1888 to me also. If so, there were 10,720,483 minted, worth about $28.00 in "GOOD" condition, as of Sept. 2015, & Jan. 2016, (Source: U.S. Coin Prices Magazine). If you just can't tell, there is a thing called "Nic-a-date", it is made for Nickels, and a drop of will almost always bring out the number. It has worked on a couple of buffalo's for me, unless the number is TOO FAR gone. The stuff is hard to find anymore though.

Sometimes if you do a pencil rubbing the date will pop out. Place a sheet of notebook paper over it and lightly rub a pencil over the date. This works great for finding info from old tombstones that have worn away too....
