I picked up a gorgeous midcentury tension lamp today and am preparing to list it on eBay but have some issues with this item that I've never encountered before. The first "first" is that I've never had to pack/ship such a large, oddly-shaped and relatively delicate item. It breaks down into sections roughly 3" long with two shades on one section & one shade on another (the remaining third/top of the pole is purely structural and detaches completely while the other two parts are wired together). My current plan is to immobilize everything with blocks of styrofoam and then pad with air pillows/bags. Does this sound workable? Does this item call for double boxing? If the metal shades were easier to remove I could box them individually but the wiring runs through them and it's in really good shape so no way I'm messing with that.

The second "first" is that I want to present this item in the best possible shape/functionality. I actually already own a similar lamp and had considered listing it before, but we rewired it and I wasn't sure how that would affect value, my seller protection etc. The wiring on this one appears totally intact and everything functions as it should so I'm not going to mess with that. Even the finish is 90% pristine, but the gold chrome finish on the end caps & spring-loaded header & footer poles is wrecked. If I were keeping it I would definitely have it re-chromed but I'm not sure if I should mess with it here. Any advice on any of this is greatly appreciated!

I have never understood double boxing for most items. The only exception is if it's very heavy and prone to end up on the bottom of the box. Otherwise I think an oversized well packed box is sufficient. I occasionally get double boxing requested but I only do it if they pay a lot extra for it. Things I might consider double boxing would be a guitar amp or stereo equipment where there is an awkward weight to the box.

Can't help you with the other part.

Thanks for the input, that's the route I'll go (single well-packed box).
