20191207_170558.webp20191207_170607.webp My dad found this Forest Warden badge here in Central Virginia and we were wondering if anyone could help us find out who it belonged too? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Oh and sorry for the sideways pics i dont know why it happens

I would think that you should email the Virginia Dept of Forestry and ask them. They probably don't have records back as old as that badge looks, though.

Yeah my dad seems to think its from the 20s or 30s. I should also add that the badge number is 503 if that helps.

1920's is a safe bet. The Virginia Forest Service was started in 1914.

During the 1920's the Office of the State Forester grew steadily, with state appropriationsgrowing annually, increased forestry staff, and more ambitious fire protection programs. In 1926 the Virginia legislature created the Conservation and Development Commission, with W. E. Carson as Chairman. The new commission took over the Office of the StateForester as well as the Geological Survey from the former Geological Commission. Thatsame year the state was organized into four forestry districts: Tidewater, Piedmont,Northwest, and Southwest. Each area had a headquarters office headed by a districtranger. In 1928 the Office of the State Forester embarked on a program of constructingsteel lookout towers throughout Virginia The first such tower to be built was an eighty-foot tower in Spotsylvania County.

Matt that article was a great read, thanks for your help. As mick said, we might try and email the Dept of Forestry. I can also imagine that it would've sucked to lose his badge :laughing7:

For what it's worth, a quick Image search on Google suggests that yours is a very low serial number (so, presumably #503 is an early-issued badge)?

I saw online images for badge #'s: 925, 1606, 2289, 2657, 3036, 4481 and 6377.

I did notice that which is also what hopefully makes it older, but also might make it harder to find who it belonged to.

Maybe try this:

To request records from the Virginia Department of Forestry, you may direct your request to Ed Zimmer, Deputy State Forester. He can be reached at Virginia Department of Forestry, Fontaine Research Park, 900 Natural Resources Drive, Suite 800, Charlottesville Virginia, 22903. Email: ed.zimmer@dof.virginia.gov.
In addition, the Freedom of Information Advisory Council is available to answer any questions you may have about FOIA. The Council may be contacted by e-mail, or by phone at 804.225.3056 or [toll free] 1.866.448.4100.
