✅ SOLVED Help with part of a writing set

Just wondering what the little brush next to the old inkwell was used for. It was found with a rocker blotter and letter opener on top of a desk in an old home. Looks like the brush part is worn down quite a bit so it must have been used a lot. It also seemed odd that the little glass insert for the ink was in such a large brass pot - 4 3/8" across the base and 3" tall.
