Shreveport / Bossier is a very old settlement area, but there were no CW battles in the immediate area. When Porters' Fleet came up the Red River, his scouts reported back to him that there was a Confederate fort on the river just out of Shreveport that has a serious number of cannon and troops. Porter and his Union Infantry commander decided that a huge battle there was not necessary at that time and turned back south on the river. Those "cannon" were actually logs painted black and mounted on the fort walls. That's how the fort came to be called Fort Humbug.

Since you don't have much time left before visiting the area, your best bet will have to be the older schools in the city or contact someone in the area, through a club or the Louisiana section on this forum. If you are an active duty military member, you could go onto Barksdale AFB and detect the Personnel / Finance building (which was the original barracks building) and the Civil Engineering Building across the street that was the original base hospital. I found 2 standing liberty quarters about 2 feet apart, in the grass roots, in the front yard area of the Personnel Building. Of course that was in about 1975.
