Re: Here's another stumper

Some of the design elements appear similar to those of certain coins from the Bishopric of Salzburg, Austria in the 18th century: portrait of bishop with cross/crucifix, "hat" above cross and coat of arms, tassels, etc. (See below.) Perhaps that might offer a clue.

Re: Here's another stumper

Had me stumped with nothing in my searches until I zoomed in really good on the coin/token and noticed a couple more dots.
ANNDELEVI is actually ANN DE LEVI

http://www.cgb.fr/monnaies/jetons/j01/j010010.html

I dont know french but heres what google translated..

75. F.9344, 1655, (Copper,)
A/ANN. OF. LEVI. OF. VANT. P.P. Arch. BITU Bust with Dr. d' André Levis de Ventadour, Archbishop of Bourges
R/LEVI. OF. BLOOD. PRAESUL. ; with the epigraph: 1655 “Prelate resulting from the blood of Lévi” Weapons of Andre Levis de Ventadour
B 200FF.

"Levis de Ventadour claimed to go down from Lévi, wire of Jacob, father of the Levites and consequently occasion being cousin of the Virgin, who belonged to the tribe of Lévi."

another site in need of translating..
http://www.medarus.org/Ardeche/07celebr/07celTex/ventadour_anne.htm

you might notice the coat of arms on the second page. The two upper panels are backwards from the coin. ???

cheers,

Re: Here's another stumper

Congrats, Mechtech! That's some super sleuthing! Based on the information at the first link, it would indeed appear to be the same piece— and not a coin but a jeton (counter, token). Presumably 200 FF is the estimated value: 200 French francs, which at current exchange rates would be about $40 U.S.

Mechtech...I'm amazed that you were able to find anything. This forum has some real geniuses. Too bad I'm not included in that company.
I'll have to have a friend translate all that French for me so that I can fully understand this piece.
Great work!!!
