Hessian Button - Modern Replica ?
Found a unique button front while creek hunting this morning. The image is a 3 legged Teutonic eagle with Latin words that translate "God Is Our Hope". A little bit of research reveals that these buttons would have been worn on the jackets of Hessian soldiers (German's with the British) during the revolutionary war. Hmm... interesting. However, it turns out there are 20th century replicas of the same button. I assume it is a replica, but would invite any opinions.
The area here in Ohio does have revolutionary war history. The creek the button was recovered from is less than five miles from Ohio's only revolutionary war fort, Fort Laurens. It also had a popular ford/crossing from the mid 1700's. The creek is also near a small town that was founded in 1815. So, again, I assume it is a replica. I couldn't get so lucky. The back to the button is missing. It is about the size of a dime and very lightweight. Believe it is made of a copper/bronze type metal.
Thanks for looking.
