The lettering does appear to be Greek.
Maybe marking a toumb?

I suspect that what is pic'd is part of a larger structure. Would love to know what this is all about, if not for the interest and historical value/knowledge. I love that slab and lettering, I could look at that all day.

JimmyV, I'm not sure about the tree though. Everyone knows that if the central main bud is eaten by an insect, damaged somehow or even pinched off with fingers the two lateral side buds will take over and grow. Giving you that U shape. Don't ask how I know that lol.

Whether it was done on purpose of by natural means I can't say.
