I went out knocking on doors for permission to metal detect after work a few months ago in North Carolina. Unlike the situation you see today where everyone is home, I struck out on 4 consecutive attempts, not with “no’s” but with “no answers”. On my way out of town I decided to stop at a house that looked a little more modern than the late 1800s built houses that I had previously targeted. The yard looked very huntable and I only had an hour to hunt before dark. The couple that lived there were some of the nicest people that I have met in this hobby and told me that the house was built in 1940. They purchased the house 28 years prior from the family of the guy who built it, since he had passed. All of this is in the video attached as well.
Anyway, they give me permission and I start detecting thinking that my good targets would be silver coins. My main focus for sites are typically much older or the beach. After hunting in the front yard for about 10 mins the husband comes out and says that another detectorist had just been there a few months prior, but he didn’t detect the back yard and offered permission for the back. I took him up on it and within 10 mins I dug this old 14k gold tie clip with initials SS. I showed the owners the find since they may have lost it in the past. It wasn’t theirs but they said the previous owners’ initials were SS and he had owned a clothing store downtown in the 30s and 40s. Sure enough it was his 14k gold tie clip! The store was called B&S Department Store Co. The pictures are from 1954 of the store.
I also dug a 1954 dime before leaving.
