I am new to the site. I am a volunteer for my local historical society. We are currently working on setting up a detecting day at some old farm sites. We are also trying to set up a day near an old abandoned railroad housing area that is now just foundations of about a dozen houses.
So get involved it only takes a few hours a month or more if you want. The power of the society might get you into places where you might not get access.
