Hit a "new to me" cellar hole yesterday for a couple of hours. I think it's been hit before, however, the leaves were deep so I wasn't getting close to the ground. Probably worth going back based on what I found. Can anyone get a date from the pictures of the LC? I can see the 1 and 8, and maybe a 3? Forgot to add the tip of a pewter spoon a I found there.

After that I headed to a park near me. Did the beach for an hour and got 3 crusty wheaties and a silver dime. Hit a grassy area after that and found 3 more wheaties, and one of the coolest silver rings I have found. The picture doesn't do it justice. Center is an amethyst, but the other stones really sparkle. Anyone know what they are?

Overall not too shabby of a return for braving the 36 degree cold! Thank goodness for under-armour and layers!

Looks like a sweet hunt to me. I got a pile of crap out of my last cellar hole and no coins.

Anyone, know anything about the McGregor pendant thing?

I am pretty sure that the stones are marcasite. I found a WWII sweetheart pendent earlier this year that had stones that looked just like that. Great Finds!

Neat finds!!! I too believe those stones are marcasite, the purple one is probably amethyst.

You are 100% correct on the marcasite, I was able to google some silver jewelry and it looks identical. Very cool!

Actually, check this quote out from Wiki:

Marcasite jewelry is jewelry made from pyrite (fool's gold), not, as the name suggests, from marcasite.[SUP][1][/SUP] Pyrite is similar to marcasite, but more stable and less brittle. Marcasite jewellery has been made since the time of the Ancient Greeks.[SUP][2][/SUP] It was particularly popular in the eighteenth century, the Victorian eraand with Art Nouveau jewellery designers.[SUP][2][/SUP][SUP][3][/SUP] It is frequently made by setting small pieces of pyrite into silver.[SUP][3][/SUP] Cheaper costume jewelry is made by glueing pieces of pyrite rather than setting.[SUP][2][/SUP] A similar-looking type of jewellery can be made from small pieces of cut steel.[SUP][1][/SUP][SUP][2][/SUP]
