I don't know about where you live but detecting is not allowed in State Parks in NC. Always check Park rules and be careful!
 

go to mytopo.com, you can select United States. Select "Historic Maps", then select what state you want and what area you are interested in, match the old maps up with current ones, to find old homesites, foundations etc...it has worked really well for me in the past and has produced a bunch of old coins and relics. As always with state owned parks, or any property or land that is not owned by you, its best to get permission (written) if possible before detecting. Happy Dirt Fishing, and Happy Holidays.

Yes!! They could not survive without water close by.
Springs can dry up, though.
Some of the colonial houses I hunt have springs coming up right in the
basements.
