Yesterday I found a large horseshoe in a area that once was an 1860's farm known "for raising fine horses for sale." Although there were farms preceding this on this site, it is a match for the 1863 shoe cited in Hume's "A Guide To Artifacts of Colonial America."
I find a fair number of animal shoes including partial ox shoes. I even find bells, clappers to bells, rig and harness pieces, steel rim wheel liners, as well as broken plow pieces. I leave them re-buried where I found them at sites as I do all large iron artifacts. I photograph them, including many rose nails and spikes, for an area historical summary which I will someday publish for future historians and lovers of local history.
The second photo is of a shoe found at a much older local site. I find it interesting how crudely they are often fashioned, sometimes repaired, used on apparently much smaller animals.
