how can ya tell if its gold?

i found a chunk of metal that looks like gold from a house that burnt down in the 40's you can bite down on it and leave teeth marks but does that mean anything is brass soft enough to leave bite marks? im thanking maybe a gold coin that was melted when the house burnt down

IF you want to know whether or not it's gold, take it to a coin shop and have it tested.
