How old could this be

This is a water find. The top of the ruby was so black and badly pitted that I shaved a little off on a grinder so the color would show. It looks very old and is a 10K. Do you think it is worth refaceting?

If it was me, I'd go for it. It's a beautiful, ornate ring with a gorgeous stone. Just think how it would look in your collection all restored, refaceted and beautiful! Looks late 1800's - early 1900's to me.

The ruby was pitted? That doesn't sound right. Are you sure it isn't glass?

Allen, This ring was a water find. I seen all kinds of stones pitted from the sand. It is a ruby, there is no mistaking the beautiful shades of purple, grape, and red.

Don't forget that synthetic rubies have been around since the late 1800's. I have found several very old rings with the synthetic ones. If it was a smaller stone in a higher karat setting it would have a better chance of being a natural ruby.

Synthetic rubies are the same as naturals, but without all the flaws.

That is a beautiful ring you have there and if you plan on keeping it then go ahead and get it restored. If it is a calibrated stone, it might be cheaper to buy another stone for it than to have that one re-cut.

i would at least have someone re-polish it not with a grinder but hey it worked for you if it was me it would have broke in half or something lol great find HH
