How old do you think this buckle is if you had to guess? Also what might it have been used for? The only keeper today, 20ft from a stone-lined well in the middle of the woods. I can only find similar in online searches if I type in spectacle buckle or double loop buckle, but I don't really know what else to try searching. Thanks!

It certainly looks kinda like a spectacle buckle but I dont see any in my book with the recessed slot in the center bar. So maybe later. Spectacle buckles only show up on early 18th and 17th century sites.

Not sure but I do love that buckle! Never seen one like that before.

That is a pretty neat buckle!

The notch to hold the tongue in place usually means it was made in the last 100 years or so. The only other thing I see is the reddish color. Whenever I find anything brass with that reddish color, it's usually from the mid-1800's or later. Not sure why, but that's usually the case with my finds. Just my opinion..

Circa 1900. The trapped central pin is the clue, not its shape.

Wow thanks guys! Any idea what it was used for? It's 1 5/8" wide across both loops and is 1 3/8" tall along one loop and would hold a 1" leather strap.

I think it more fashion than strength & function.
